While letters capture the soul of a language, numerals shape how we measure, trade, count time, and dream of the future. Designing the Yapiri numeral system was not an afterthought — it was a deliberate act of cultural creation, one that required asking a question most script designers never face: does this language actually need its own digits?
The answer, for Kokborok, is yes — and the reasoning behind that answer illuminates the whole purpose of designing a script from scratch.
Why Numerals Matter
A script's numerals are often the first characters a person uses every day. Writing a date, noting an age, recording a price or a measurement — numbers appear constantly, woven through prose and conversation alike. If those numbers come from a foreign system while the surrounding text uses an indigenous script, the page sends a subtle message: the language is only complete enough for words, not for the full apparatus of modern life.
Every major writing tradition that has endured — Devanagari, Arabic, Bengali, Tibetan, Thai — has its own numeral set. The digits are not separate from the script; they are part of it. A writing system without its own numerals is, in a quiet but real sense, incomplete.

Three constraints shaped every numeral form from the first sketch:
- Visual unity with the alphabet. A numeral sitting beside a letter in running text must look like it belongs to the same family — same stroke weight, same curvature vocabulary, same optical size. A digit that feels imported breaks the visual coherence of the page.
- Instant distinguishability. All ten digits must be readable at a glance, with no two forms so similar that they could be confused under reading conditions. This sounds obvious but becomes genuinely difficult when the glyph set already draws from a constrained visual vocabulary shared with 39 other characters.
- No reliance on other scripts. The temptation to derive a Yapiri numeral from a Bengali or Devanagari digit — just rotate it, add a stroke — was consciously refused. Every form had to earn its place through Yapiri's own design logic.
The Ten Digits

What Makes Each Form Work
A few decisions within the set are worth explaining, because they were the hardest to reach.
Zero was settled first and became the anchor of the set. Its form needed to communicate emptiness and completeness simultaneously — a closed shape that reads as a complete unit rather than an absence. The final form carries that quality, and its proportions set the baseline expectations for the nine digits that followed.
One is the trickiest digit in any numeral set: too simple and it becomes invisible, blending into surrounding letters; too decorated and it draws the eye away from the text. The Yapiri one uses a subtle terminal that gives it visual weight without imposing.
Six and nine are mirror relationships in many numeral systems, and Yapiri is no different in its challenge. The two forms had to be visually distinct in rotation — a reader glancing at a number upside-down on a shared table cannot misread a phone number. Several versions were tested before forms were found that held their identity at every angle.
Numerals in the Keyboard
On the Keyman keyboard, the number row produces Yapiri digits by default when the Yapiri input method is active — exactly as a user would expect. Pressing 1 gives the Yapiri one, pressing 0 gives the Yapiri zero. There is no need to switch modes or learn a secondary mapping. The digits belong to the keyboard the same way they belong to the font: naturally, as first-class citizens of the writing system.

The Yapiri numeral system is more than a counting tool. It is a statement that Kokborok is complete — capable of expressing not just poetry and proverbs, but mathematics, commerce, calendars, and every domain of modern knowledge. When a child writes today's date in Yapiri, they are not borrowing from another culture's number line. They are counting in their own voice.
That is the power of thoughtful design. Small decisions made in a quiet room in Tripura become the foundation of how a language presents itself to the world. Each of these ten digits carries that weight — lightly, we hope, but unmistakably.
